603 High Lane

Who would connect High Lane with hats? Once Stockport was the biggest hat producer in the world and Christies Mill exported their hats on the canal at High Lane. "Mad as a Hatter" reminds one of Alice, though mercury poisoning was the problem and now the countryside is a walkers' Wonderland while the canal shines like a Looking Glass. This must be one of the flattest walks we have ever done. Strolling along a dead straight disused railway and walking beside a winding canal makes for a very gentle ramble and if you go in summer, not only are there canal boats to see, but the flowers are beautiful (on a recent visit we counted over seventy different species).
